SIGMA Plant Work Expertise Helps Rebuild Infrastructure After Catastrophic Weather Events
The Southeastern region of the US has been subject to many traumatic weather events over the last decade. Waterworks infrastructure in the state of Florida has been overwhelmed by a recent series of storms, which has impacted the delivery of critical water and wastewater services. Florida’s infrastructure is flood-prone because much of the state sits on sand, and waterworks pipes are often buried below sea level. In the event of severe weather events, it is not unusual for water infrastructure to be damaged or even washed away.
Growth in the Florida population has necessitated innovative approaches to water and wastewater treatment, including the building of water reclamation facilities: An example of this can be found in southern Florida. At the site, water is reused after an intense filtration process. As a result of the poor soil and the likelihood of monster storms, the treatment plant requires the full breadth of SIGMA coatings and linings to protect the SIGMA waterworks products central to its operation. Everything from fusion-bonded epoxy to anti-corrosive finishes are used to guard the waterworks products against Florida’s hostile conditions. As Char Blubaugh, one of SIGMA’s Plant Work project managers, explains: “We have some of our largest (54-inch) restraints in this reclamation facility. You can practically walk through the restraints, they’re so huge! By way of coatings and linings, what we can't paint and bake in-house then we’ll source for customers from our expert partners.”
According to Jonathan Richardson, SIGMA Territory Salesman in Florida: “The Southeast gets hit hard, and frequently, by extreme events and only the toughest products can survive. We have to move quickly to rebuild critical infrastructure to ensure service connection asap. Eighty per cent of the time we have the inventory in stock to respond to these natural disasters. If it's not on hand, then we can call on our national network to complete the order. We’ll move heaven and earth to help our customers.”
