A Ground-Up Success Story: SIGMA TSM Joel Goff

When Joel Goff joined his family’s business as a teenager, he didn’t start in a corner office. He started with a broom. “My dad made sure I learned the ropes from the ground up,” Goff recalls. “I swept floors, worked the assembly line, pulled orders from the warehouse, visited job sites—I experienced every aspect of the business.”

That hands-on foundation proved invaluable when SIGMA Corporation acquired the Goff family business in 2004. Goff stayed on, eventually becoming a key player in SIGMA’s Plant Work group, which focuses on water and wastewater infrastructure—a sector where modernization is long overdue.

“This industry is behind when it comes to updating and replacing treatment plants,” says Goff. “There’s a big push now to upgrade treatment plants in the US, and SIGMA is at the forefront.”

What sets SIGMA apart, he explains, is more than just product quality. “It’s a relationship business. People trust our team, and they trust the SIGMA name. We take care of our customers, and that makes all the difference.”

One defining moment came during a complex project with McCroskey Construction. SIGMA introduced an expediting service that cut delivery times by two-thirds—an “express lane” for products heading to job sites. “If something falls through on-site, the entire project can get held up. We don’t let that happen,” he says.

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. The uncertainty around tariffs has introduced new complexities. “Navigating that landscape is tough. Conversations with clients have to stay fluid, responsive,” Goff says. “The real game-changer has been our Plant Work team—Char, Dennis and Matt. Their ability to troubleshoot and preempt issues has been priceless.”

Off the clock, Goff keeps his competitive edge by coaching youth baseball and supporting his son’s athletic pursuits. A former college basketball player, he brings that same drive to the business arena. “I don’t like losing a job—or a sale,” he says. “Every day, I try to beat what I achieved the day before. That’s my mantra.”

Goff’s blend of discipline, field-tested experience, and client-first mentality has served his customers well. Outside of his work life, he loves to fish and hunt and spend as much time as possible with his family!
